Sotheby’s is honored to present the Leslie & Johanna Garfield Collection of prints at auction across several sales in New York and London in 2023 and 2024. The Garfields’ devotion to amassing an in-depth survey of fine prints and their steadfast commitment to art-related foundations was exceptional. Over many years. they forged strong relationships with artists, museums and dealers alike, however, it was their own eyes and interests that they most trusted, and as noted by Curator Heather Hess. The Garfield Collection is both broad and deep, featuring well established artists as well as lesser known ones, always with a dynamic exploration of their work within the printmaking medium. Their genuine curiosity and enthusiasm for discovery, of an artist or of an obscure impression, was steadfast, such that the diversity of the names was as remarkable as the survey of their works. As Leslie himself said. Amongst numerous exciting lots in these auctions, complete portfolios beautifully showcase an artist’s chosen iconography. From Jasper Johns’ First Etchings (lots 16 & 17), a display of Johns’ beloved ale cans, paintbrushes and flags, to Damien Hirst’s Last Supper, wherein Hirst’s predilection for pharmaceuticals is cheekily masked by references to common foods such as a sandwich or a sausage. Peter Doig’s 100 Years Agooffers a dichotomy of old vs. new, by juxtaposing a contemporary image with a shadowy nostalgic one, and Robert Cottingham’s An American Alphabet repackages all 26 letters, found within an array of neon signs, to present a taste of americana borrowed from a bygone landscape.

Spod uniesionej nieco żelaznej kurtyny przebija się powiew nowego. To czas odwilży projektowej i namiastka atmosfery Zachodu, odtąd w odniesieniu do obiektów użytkowych najchętniej posługiwano się terminem: „nowoczesny”. To też temat przewodni najnowszej aukcji designu w Desa Unicum. XX w., wyróżniające się abstrakcyjnym deseniem, żywymi kolorami i asymetrycznym kształtem. To właśnie słowo „nowoczesny” stoi w samym centrum aukcji.

This October, Christie’s New York will present the final installment of The Ann & Gordon Getty Collection. Completing the landmark series of sales held in October 2022 and June 2023, this grand finale features the collection from Mrs. Getty’s birthplace, a walnut farm outside of Sacramento known as Wheatland. Impelled by romanticism rather than convenience, Ann Gilbert Getty transformed her childhood home into her own rendition of the English country house. Faithful to the tradition, Wheatland appears effortlessly fused into its surrounding picturesque landscape, as though it grew slowly for centuries alongside the sprawling avenues of walnut trees that line the approach. Assembled with the greatest affection, the interiors are a triumphant collaboration of collecting traditions rooted in Mrs. Getty’s Dutch heritage. The farm’s gardens and orchards are pulled to the interior through important Dutch Old Master still lifes by the likes of Van der Ast and Van Verendael and cornucopias of Delft fruit. The collection as a whole is filled with important English Furniture and Decorative Arts including works by Chippendale, Langlois, Ince and Mayhew and Matthew Boulton.

The Sam Josefowitz Collection will be dispersed among three sales at Christie’s Paris, including an Evening sale on October 20th, a Day Sale on October 21st, and an Online sale closes on October 25th. Sam cultivated a deep passion for the history of art, building an extraordinary collection that spanned more than two millennia of artistic creation. In many ways, the collection is a reflection of Sam’s approach to life itself, shaped by a fervent pursuit of knowledge, embracing beauty, history, and cultures from across the globe. Assembled over the course of six decades, his boundless curiosity and unerring eye for quality saw Sam focus on artists and periods that had a transformative impact on the history of art. He was as intrigued by the sculptural reliefs of the Ancient Assyrians as he was the Impressionist canvases of Gustave Caillebotte, and held a particular appreciation for the radical painters of the Pont-Aven School, whom he had first discovered at an exhibition in Paris in 1955. These three auctions will focus on the Pont-Aven school, Modern art, decorative arts, particularly Alberto and Diego Giacometti, as well as a wide selection of prints and manuscripts, thus offering an exceptional opportunity for art enthusiasts to discover the richness and diversity of Sam Josefowitz’s collection, which has captivated the mind and heart of this passionate collector for decades.
